Welcome to 2020 (transplant + 7.5 years)!
Over seven years and counting! The kidney I received back in 2012 has been rock steady and still provides me with the kidney function of a non-transplant person. I now have had a donated kidney for as long as I waited on the list! With any luck, I hope to get to 5x the wait.
None of this would have been possible without my hero, the unknown chap who had the foresight to donate his kidney. Without heroes like him, none of this would be possible. This fundraiser helps raise awareness so that more future heroes can be created. I waited about 7.5 years on the transplant list waiting for my hero. Some people get it sooner, some people get it later, and some unfortunately don't make it. Raising awareness can only help reduce the wait times and make a meaningful impact on people's lives.
Kidney transplant is life altering for the recipient. Unfortunately, for some of the donors it is the life altering in the worst way. While I am grateful for the kidney, I never forget that bad things happened to make this possible. I can only hope that those who knew my hero are somehow helped by knowing that part of him is still living and well.
Stacey and I will be participating in the virtual run/walk this year. Due to the COVID-19 virus situation, it was decided that having 8k - 10k people gathering as a group was not a good idea, especially since many of us transplant recipients there might be immune suppressed. Transplant recipients have heard of and have been using N95 masks long before the virus. And it is likely that most of us have been advised not to shake hands as part of our transplanted life.
As part of this event, we try to do a little fund raising too. The virus does not mean that less awareness is needed! Most people we know are not wealthy. But if you have a couple of bucks that can be given to this cause, then please send them along. And if you don't, then that is ok too. All we ask is that you spread a word or two about organ donation, the need for it, the good that it can do, and sign up to donate your organs should you have the unfortunate opportunity to do so. You can also be a hero by being a living donor!
For us, this is all about awareness. Thank you for taking the time to read this.
